Karman Ghia Sold!!

Updated: Oct 9, 2023

Now up for sale at KJClassics is this 1965 right hand drive 1285cc VW KarmanGhia.

Needless to say there aren't many of these floating about in a right hand drive. This car was originally brought to be restored but due to more and more customer work it's become obvious I'm never going to get round to this one. That said this car will need work to make it road worthy. This car has been off the road during my ownership (22/06/21) and the last MOT elapsed in 2018. The car was treated to a fair amount of work at the karmann ghia centre between 2016-2017 which has kept it in good stead as every time I go to move the car it starts runs and drives around the yard just fine.

The chrome work has some pitting the worst of which being on the hub caps and the front bumper on the passenger side just below the indicator. Overall though not to bad for the age.

Paint work is looking a little tatty now with the odd rusty section but aside from that the outer body doesn't look to bad for a car made in 1965.

There are one or two side chrome trims not fitted however there are a selection of trim pieces in the car. I believe they are all there.

Parts for these still seem readily available so restoration or recommission shouldn't be the end of the world depending on how far the next owner wants to go.

The structure of the car is an unknown quantity as iv not had a time to have a good look over this one. The last MOT which elapsed in 2018 however does state in the advisories that the floor pan has slight corrosion so by now they may need to be replaced.

In 2017 the car was pre MOT'd by the karmann ghia centre where it had the n/s front inner wing and both lower corners of the front fire wall welded.

Both rear inner wheel arches were also welded, again at the karmann ghia centre.

The car is accompanied by a selection of MOT certificates and tax discs through the 90s and 2010s

The engine was apparently removed in 2016 where it received the following.

Gearbox rubber mounts.

12v starter motor.

Fly wheel to suit the new starter.

Crank oil seal.

New clutch.

New carburettor.

Oil pressure sender.

Ignition switch.

Service items (filters, plugs etc)

Welded o/s heater channel tube

Resealed both exhaust heater channels.

Carburettor was replaced prior to my ownership and still looks brand new having barely been used since.

Sills as stated earlier could probably do with being replaced or at the very least the bottom flange could use some attention.

Door bottoms could also be improved on as seen hear.

Interior is showing its age a bit however the carpets are fine and the steering wheel is in great condition.

Door cards could probably be vastly improved by just a good clean but the seats will need to be repaired or recovered if replacements can be found.
