Some say the convertible e type is the most beautiful car ever made and that in its day it would go 150mph. That remains to be seen by me and I won’t be testing the theory but one thing is for certain and that is that we finally have an e type in the kjclassics workshop.

First job is the oil and oil filter change. The filter on this v12 is located in a nice easy to reach place at the front of the engine. Happy days!

Next is the fuel filter change. Another easy to reach service item this time in the boot. Jaguar were really making things easy for me on this one.

Something lots of people over look is the pcv (positive crankcase ventilation) system. If this gets blocked, left over combustion gasses are not able to escape the engine block which can cause all sorts of issues. Best keep it clean.

Air filters are next on the service list. Another easy job although there are two filter on this engine to change.

Removing the spark plugs can tell you a lot about the fuel mix. In this case there were some brown tipped plugs and some quite sooty plugs. This shows me that the fuel mixture is slightly too rich.

As you can see the header tank had seen better days, with a few drips leaking from the corrosion it was time to replace this part.

It’s important when servicing a classic car to not only change the normal service items but also keep an eye out for any unforeseen issues…..just like this split vacume hose. The fact we have dark sooty spark plugs even with a vacuum leak suggests the mixture is probably a lot richer than it should be.

On to the carburettors of which there are four on this engine. The first thing is to balance the using a flow meter

Next is the adjustment to the mixture using the appropriate tool to raise or lower the needle jet as needed.

Finally the damper oil is topped up and the carbs are done.

A quick top up of the steering fluid and we’re done under the bonnet.

On to the brakes and it’s clear we don’t need much here. Just a strip down, blow the brake dust away, grease the sliders and put them back in.

The grease points are the next thing to be topped up insuring all the moving suspension joints are lubricated.

Two of the exhaust mounting rubbers were found to be perished and broken and so were replaced.

The last job is to top up the gear oil through the access panel in the floor and then the job is done!
